To me, freedom entitles you to do something, not to not do something.
Why should we leave it to Harper & Brothers and Redding & Co. to select our reading?
Simplify your life. Don't waste the years struggling for things that are unimportant. Don't burden yourself with possessions. Keep your needs and wants simple and enjoy what you have. Don't destroy your peace of mind by looking back, worrying about the past. Live in the present. Simplify!
It's the beauty within us that makes it possible for us to recognize the beauty around us. The question is not what you look at but what you see.
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately.
You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this, or the like of this. You never judge a person if they're going through their downs because you always stick with them when they're going through their ups. If you stay in football business long enough, you're going to have some bad games and you're going to have some bad seasons.
Don't tell me about heaven. What about in this life, that there is a better way, that this is not in vain, that it is not Edward Albee or Camus's absurd, the theater of the absurd, it is not Shakespeare - "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing" - that life has meaning and that God is still in control, and that God can, and God will, so people of goodwill, working hard, do something about the situation? We can change.
There are two Americas - separate, unequal, and no longer even acknowledging each other except on the barest cultural terms. In the one nation, new millionaires are minted every day. In the other, human beings no longer necessary to our economy, to our society, are being devalued and destroyed.
