Jeff Beck is my idol. . sometimes he finds notes that I just do not have on my guitar. Frank Zappa's another one. . I loved Frank Zappa. . . I do think Van Halen reinvented the guitar. . . he's an excellent musician, a shrewd guitarist and as a person he's wonderful.
But you have to give your whole life to a cello. When I realized that, I went back to the guitar and just turned the volume up a bit louder.

I was the fifth child in a family of six, five boys and one girl. Bless that poor girl. We were very poor; it was the 30s. We survived off of the food and the little work that my father could get working on the roads or whatever the WPA provided. We were always in line to get food. The survival of our family really depended on the survival of the other black families in that community. We had that village aspect about us, that African sense about us. We always shared what we had with each other. We were able to make it because there was really a total family, a village.
Don't ever quit. Never quit. Never show anybody you're hurt. Grin and walk through the cannon smoke. It will drive them up the wall. You always stay true to your own principles. You always believe in your gift. God doesn't make mistakes when he presents someone with a gift like that. It's there for a reason. Tell the naysayers, those who reject you, to drop dead! Who cares?
