Many of the books on my list are, in my opinion, amazing. Some I didn't like. But I give them all five stars, because stars make people - including me -- happy.
I think I'm like most novelists in that my books have gotten farther and farther away from autobiography the longer I've been writing them.
The only true equalisers in the world are books; the only treasure-house open to all comers is a library; the only wealth which will not decay is knowledge; the only jewel which you can carry beyond the grave is wisdom.
More books, more racing and more foolishness with cars and motorcycles are in the works.
Great books are written from a sense that there is nothing to lose.
Here's my rule: You always want to pay cash for your own books, because if they look at the name on the credit card and then they look at the name on the book jacket, then there's this look of such profound sympathy for you that you had to resort to this. It really is withering.

I have a very big apartment in Paris but you can't really move around there anymore; piles of books everywhere. I don't want any more books. I have too many books; sometimes I have to buy another copy of a book that I know I have somewhere in my house or office because I can't find it.
As long as we have books, we are not alone.
Reading is important. Books are important. Librarians are important. (Also, libraries are not child-care facilities, but sometimes feral children raise themselves among the stacks. )
It is one of the misfortunes in life that one must read thousands of books only to discover that one need not have read them.
I still feel, as I did when I was six or seven, that books are simply the best way to experience a story.
Books are often far more than just books.
I loved books; I read my childhood away. I was more interested in my interior world.
