The challenge throughout has been to tell what I view as the truth about racism without causing disabling despair.
Black people are the magical faces at the bottom of society's well. Even the poorest whites, those who must live their lives only a few levels above, gain their self-esteem by gazing down on us. Surely, they must know that their deliverance depends on letting down their ropes. Only by working together is escape possible. Over time, many reach out, but most simply watch, mesmerized into maintaining their unspoken commitment to keeping us where we are, at whatever cost to them or to us (Bell).
It appears that my worst fears have been realised: we have made progress in everything yet nothing has changed.

We live in a system that espouses merit, equality, and a level playing field, but exalts those with wealth, power, and celebrity, however gained.
Education leads to enlightenment. Enlightenment opens the way to empathy. Empathy foreshadows reform.
Something very beautiful happens to people when their world has fallen apart: a humility, a nobility, a higher intelligence emerges at just the point when our knees hit the floor. Perhaps, in a way, that's where humanity is now: about to discover we're not as smart as we thought we were, will be forced by life to surrender our attacks and defenses which avail us of nothing, and finally break through into the collective beauty of who we really are.

When you're young and you don't grow up with a silver spoon in your mouth, what do you do? You do stuff that you're positive about to help you better your family and your life. That's basically where I was. I wanted to sing, that's what I knew I could do. With that, I really didn't know what that meant. Along the journey I realized what that meant and why I wanted to sing.
In a Republican primary every candidate is going to come in front of you and say I'm the most conservative guy that ever lived. Goshdarnit, whodidily, I'm conservative. You know what, talk is cheap. The word tells us you shall know them by their fruits. . . Look every candidate in the eye and say 'Don't talk, show me. '
